🖤 The Thyroid Impacts To Your Mental Health | Issue 193
Living with a thyroid condition often isn't easy.
Did you know that thyroid disease often comes hand in hand with mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression?
I have spoken about this at great length in my thyroid advocacy work, as mental health is such a big part of many people’s experiences of thyroid disease. After all, it was mine. I’m diving in to this further in this newsletter.

Thursday Thoughts
At the height of my autoimmune hypothyroidism wreaking its havoc, I was suicidal. I was having daily panic attacks, was anxiety ridden and depressed.
And I know I’m not alone in those experiences. I hear from many other thyroid patients who experience mental health struggles with thyroid disease.
Mood Swings.
Feeing very emotional
Anxiety.
Depression.
Bipolar.
Low self-esteem.
Brain Fog.
Trouble Concentrating.
I strongly believe that the link between thyroid health and mental health needs repeating until everyone is aware of the importance.
My mental health was all over the place for years, until I was finally diagnosed and optimally treated for my thyroid issues. I had to piece together this puzzle to regain better health, yet I couldn’t start it from a place of deep depression without first optimising my thyroid hormone levels.
Antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications and more can be a great help to many people and it is important that we do not feed the stigma that taking them is ‘wrong‘. I am not anti-medication (I’ve been on antidepressants myself) but I am pro-informed decision, which means making sure that thyroid patients also experiencing poor mental health, know that addressing their endocrine health fully may well resolve this too.
Poor mental health with thyroid issues can be due to:
Low / High Free T3 / T4 levels (non-optimised levels)
High thyroid antibody levels (Hashimoto’s)
Nutrient deficiencies / low levels (ferritin, folate, B12, D etc.)
Living with thyroid disease itself can impact our mental health if we’re finding it hard, too. It’s not easy to feel worn down, fatigued, achey and brain fogged all the time, especially if it impacts work, socialising and relationships.
When we change to a new thyroid medication or have the dosage adjusted, this can also cause mood swings, emotional swings and more, as our body adjusts.
Hypothyroidism can also cause changes in appearance, for example weight gain, acne and hair loss. These changes can be upsetting and lead to low self-esteem or depression.
Please check out the possible causes link above and explore the information I have on them.

Personal Health Check-in
The dance cardio class I attend is coming to an end, so I need to find a new one. I’d also love to find an in-person yoga class.
My back pain is also playing up again. Strengthening my back is going slow. It’s hard not to feel really frustrated at times!
