This Weekâs Topic: The FDA NDT Ban
How will this impact you?
On 6th August 2025, the FDA issued a statement saying that it plans to remove all NDT medications from the US market by August 2026.
This includes:
Armour Thyroid
NP Thyroid
Ren Thyroid
Niva Thyroid
all compounded forms of NDT
all bovine and porcine thyroid extracts
any meds or supplements with these extracts
What does this mean?
It means that, if their plans go ahead, all of these medications will not be possible to obtain in the US after this date. Importing from abroad is likely to also become illegal. This is devastating to many people who rely on these medications, because T4-only synthetics and possibly also T3 synthetics, have not worked.
Why is this happening?
NDT medications have been under threat for many years. The FDA are saying they are removing them because theyâre not âFDA approvedâ. However, they are âFDA regulatedâ.
Why are they not approved? Because theyâre really old. Over a hundred years old. These meds were the first type to be created for hypothyroidism and they have been âgrandfathered inâ. They are very popular, with 1.5 million. prescriptions for NDT medication being issues in the US alone last year! This is a lot of people being impacted.
The FDA has previously stated they needed to be approved as a âbiological drugâ by 2029 but it seems this has now shifted to 2026. Those that have not gone through the process of becoming an approved âbiological drugâ will be banned next year, and the likeliness of all brands completing this within 12 months is very unlikely. Itâs hard to say if any could complete it within this short timeframe, but of all brands, Armour is the most likely to do so. If one does manage to get that approval in time, it will likely raise the price of it significantly, which can cause further issues to thyroid patients accessing it.
You can read the full FDA statement here.
And here is the letter they sent out to all involved with distributing NDT meds.
NDT medications are life savers for many, many people with hypothyroidism around the world. I am one of the many people who could not function on Levothyroxine (synthetic T4) alone. This is shocking news to the wellbeing of many people with hypothyroidism.
For those of us outside of the US, our fate is also undetermined. American NDT companies may stop making NDT altogether if they lose most their market, or the cost of them could rise significantly.

This is not the first time thyroid patients have felt unheard, misunderstood and misrepresented. It is certainly not the first time we have felt that our hypothyroidism medication options are limited or being threatened. Stayed informed and stay proactive. I believe there is a chance to change this if we show ours numbers.
If you are currently on NDT medication, the FDA is advising doctors to move their patients over to an alternative within the next year. However, most people who take NDT have already tried and found no relief on FDA-approved synthetic thyroid hormone replacement medication, such as Levothyroxine, Synthroid, Liothyronine etc. so it is completely missing the point.

Personal Health Check-in
Around April time of this year, I realised I felt really run down, fatigued and low in mood. Lots of familiar thyroid symptoms were returning and I had gone from living symptom-free with thyroid disease to struggling daily with it again.
A blood test showed that my FT3 and FT4 levels had dropped a lot and my iron was still low (Iâve been anaemic for most my adult life due to extremely heavy periods).
Since then, Iâve done a lot of work, starting a new iron supplement, tweaking the tranexamic acid further to normalise the heaviness of my periods, and increased both Armour Thyroid and Levothyroxine (one at a time) until weâve reached the point of my thyroid levels now looking optimal again, and symptoms being controlled.
I also finally had my back injections two weeks ago and can confirm that I have been pain free since! Iâm still doing physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles, but itâs now a case of waiting and seeing how long the relief lasts for.

Social Health Award Finalist!
I am so excited and pleased to share that I am a 2025 Social Health Award Finalist! đŠľ
These awards recognise health advocates making a difference with their advocacy and Iâve been chosen as a finalist for the âRevolutionary Researcherâ category, recognising those who break down the jargon and deliver easy to understand and utilise information to their audience.
People with thyroid disease struggle with fatigue and brain fog (some of the most difficult symptoms we experience), and I started The Invisible Hypothyroidism 10 years ago to break down the overwhelming, confusing information about thyroid disorders so that more of us could become our own thyroid advocates and recover our health. Therefore, it means A LOT to be among the top 5 chosen for this award. đ
Breaking down information and making it more accessible through my website articles, social media content, 4 bestselling books and weekly email newsletters is the core of what I do. It ensures more of us can get better, delivering the information we need and avoiding the extra, overwhelming âfluffâ!
Getting the opportunity to shine a light on the misunderstood thyroid disease is invaluable. I am so grateful to be in this position.
Thank you thank you thank you đŚ đŠľ
The winner will be announced at the online event hosted by Social Health Network on 12th September!

If thereâs one thyroid symptom Iâve been asked about more times than I can count, yet have never seen discussed before, itâs an itchy scalp.

I wish I knew what else I can do about this ban. I signed the on-line petition and shared the information with my naturopath and social media. I also contacted the manufacturer and encouraged them to fight it. I am in the USA and there is so much going that this issue is not on anybody's radar. I have relied on these medications for five years after going through all the synthetic ones that did not work. I am really stressed about it happening. I am glad you shared the information with us.
