However, we have this week received an important update on this news. Keep reading for more information.

This Week’s Topic: The FDA NDT Ban Update
Where are we now?
Since the FDA’s announcement last August, saying that NDT’s including:
Armour Thyroid
NP Thyroid
Ren Thyroid
Niva Thyroid
all compounded forms of NDT
all bovine and porcine thyroid extracts
any meds or supplements with these extracts
would be banned, I have received messages daily, asking me for an update. Until last week, we didn’t have one.
On 11th March, the FDA released a new statement, clarifying:
That their focus is on making sure NDT’s are safe and regulated, not removing your choice as a patient.
They will remain available, with no planned bans currently.
Instead, manufacturers will be issued with further clarification and guidelines on producing these drugs and gaining approved status for them as a biological drug.
What does this mean?
Those currently happy on NDT in the US can remain on it - amazing news when it is such a lifeline to so many thyroid patients (I’ve experienced this firsthand).
It should therefore also remain available to the rest of the world (something those of us outside the US were unsure about).
Armour is one brand currently going through the approval process and many others will likely follow suit in due course.
Unfortunately, we may still be looking at price increases for NDT medications, due to more of them going through the ‘approved biological drug’ process.
This is incredibly reassuring news that many thyroid patients around the world should be able to retain access to their meds. Please share this out to the rest of the thyroid community. We did it!
You can use my Instagram Video and Facebook Video - to share the news and also leave your story in the comments sections.
Last year, I said in my previous newsletter about this:
“This is not the first time thyroid patients have felt unheard, misunderstood and misrepresented. It is certainly not the first time we have felt that our hypothyroidism medication options are limited or being threatened. Stayed informed and stay proactive. I believe there is a chance to change this if we show ours numbers.”
And we did change it. We signed and shared online petitions, we sent the FDA our stories and we’ve made a huge change that we should be very proud of. This is what can happen when we use our voices together - this is such a win for thyroid patient advocacy.
NDT medications are life savers for many. I am one of the many people who could not function on Levothyroxine alone. Last year’s statement was shocking news to many, but now, we can breathe.
If you still have questions, please talk with your doctor.

Thank you SO much for this update. I rely on NP and was very concerned it might not be available going forward. This issue has been in my thoughts recently and it was helpful to get this news as I had not seen it elsewhere. I live in Vermont, USA and so much is in chaos right now in our country it is hard to keep up with news.
I’ve attempted twice to switch from Armour, to NP and Synthroid; both utter failures.
Armour, from what I understand, buffers the T3, and NP does not. That little detail makes a huge difference. On NP, my blood pressure rose significantly and I thought I was having a heart attack. So the doctor suggested a second medication for the blood pressure rise.
Synthroid caused major hair loss and general discomfort. At that point my doctor suggested I find another endocrinologist.
Armour is perfect for me.
